Toni Mastriani

Missing You

Toni Mastriani is Jessica Mastriani’s mother, a figure whose concern often takes the form of opposition but whose final response makes room for her daughter’s changed life. Her resistance to Rob Wilkins gives way, in the closing scene, to an explicit welcome into the family.

Family and Initial Opposition

When Rob arrives at the Mastriani home in his shiny black pickup, Toni is cooking egg whites. She follows Jessica to the front door, leaving the food sizzling, and reminds her that they had already discussed Rob: in her view, he was no good for Jessica. Her response establishes an existing disagreement rather than a sudden objection, though the evidence does not specify its earlier course or causes. Rob greets her politely as Mrs. Mastriani; she remains opposed as Jessica leaves to meet him.

Toni’s concern also surfaces when Jessica returns unexpectedly amid a scandal involving a teenage runaway and pornography. At the grocery store, Mrs. Leskowski has told Toni about the situation, and Toni confronts Jessica with what she has heard. She links the gossip to an earlier incident involving Mark, suggesting that the community’s judgment is not the only thing on her mind. When Douglas Mastriani begins to address her as Ma, Toni automatically tells him not to, a small but telling indication of her own preference about how her children address her.

Conflict over Jessica’s Independence

During the confrontation, Toni asks Jessica directly whether her powers have returned. The question shows that she connects Jessica’s sudden involvement in the crisis to the possibility of those abilities, although the scene does not establish what Toni believes about them. Her attention shifts from the public scandal to a personal change in her daughter.

Jessica, meanwhile, frames their conflict as a longer-standing lack of support. She tells Toni that perhaps she would have turned out more as her mother wanted if Toni had supported her in anything besides attending Juilliard School. Toni’s eyebrows rise in response; no reconciliation follows immediately. The exchange leaves the disagreement visible: Jessica names the support she feels she did not receive, while Toni’s reaction registers the force of the accusation without resolving it.

Welcome into the Family

The closing scene alters Toni’s stance toward Rob. Jessica’s throat still hurts, but she puts an arm around her mother and squeezes her, asking Toni to understand the change not as the loss of a daughter but as finally getting her back. Toni admits that she does not understand everything happening, then looks toward Rob, who is watching her carefully, and welcomes him to the family. His relieved grin makes clear how much the welcome matters to him.

As police cruisers arrive outside, Toni makes one more change in address: she tells Rob to call her Ma. Earlier she had resisted that form of address from Douglas; now she offers it to Rob as an expression of acceptance. The shift does not erase her earlier objections or settle every difference with Jessica, but it closes the family encounter on a gesture of inclusion rather than prohibition.

Narrative Role

Toni’s role is defined by the tension between protection and support. She objects to Rob and reacts to the danger and public exposure surrounding Jessica’s return, but Jessica’s complaint makes clear that maternal concern has not always felt like encouragement to her. The final welcome gives that conflict a concrete, limited resolution: Toni may not understand the events or agree with every choice, yet she accepts Rob as part of the family and responds to Jessica’s changed circumstances with closeness.
